Cúirt International Festival of Literature is honoured to host the launch of Belonging, the long-awaited memoir from historian and advocate Catherine Corless. Catherine will be joined in conversation by journalist and author of Republic of Shame, Caelainn Hogan.
Belonging: A Memoir of Place, Beginnings and One Woman’s Search for Truth and Justice for the Tuam Babies is the compelling narrative that explores Corless’ life and personal history and her journey as the historian who made the discovery that shocked the world at the Tuam Mother and Baby Home in County Galway. At the age of 51, after enrolling in a local history evening course, Catherine Corless began to research the Tuam Mother and Baby Home, which she had passed on her way to school every day as a child. After a lengthy period of research, Corless uncovered a dark truth at the heart of the institution; a mass burial site for almost 800 babies located on the grounds of the home. With compassion and integrity, Corless has fought for over a decade to seek justice and restitution for the innumerable people impacted by the actions of those in power in these exploitative institutions. This work has been met with fierce resistance, but throughout Corless has been and remains a champion for the voices of those who made it out of the mother and baby homes and those whose testimony will never be heard.
