In November 2023, Paul Lynch became the sixth Irish writer to win the Booker Prize for his outstanding novel Prophet Song. Set in an imagined Ireland that is descending into tyranny, this novel is an exhilarating, propulsive and confrontational portrait of a country – and a family – on the brink of catastrophe. On a dark, wet evening in Dublin, scientist and mother-of-four Eilish Stack answers her front door to find the GNSB on her doorstep. Two officers from Ireland’s newly formed secret police want to speak with her husband, a trade unionist.
This is a work of breathtaking originality, described as a ‘soul-shattering and true’ novel that ‘captures the social and political anxieties of our current moment’ by the Booker judging chair. Lynch offers a devastating vision of societal collapse and a deeply human portrait of a woman’s fight to hold her family together. Join Paul in conversation with Paula Shields from Arena, RTE R1
