Galway has long had an innovative cultural and artistic life, drawing on Irish language and tradition as well influences from elsewhere in the world. Two hundred years of this history is explored in a lavishly-illustrated volume edited by John Cunningham and Ciaran McDonough, and with contributions from thirty-eight writers.
Starting with James Hardiman’s History of Galway (1820), the volume looks at representations of the city in art and literature, as well as local endeavour in a variety of areas – music, theatre, language, dance, architecture.
To mark the launch of the book, the editors will discuss Galway’s cultural life with a panel of contributors including Anna Falkenau and Prof. Lionel Pilkington.
