Saturday, 12 April 2025, 6:00pm
Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop / Free
Tolka is Ireland’s leading literary journal showcasing a wide variety of non-fiction, from essays to travel writing and autofiction. Join two of their contributors, Declan Toohey and Brenda Romero, as they read excerpts from the journal and discuss their distinctive styles and unique approaches to writing non-fiction with Molly Hennigan.
Declan’s debut novel Perpetual Comedown is an imaginative and formally playful work.
Brenda is a BAFTA-winning game designer and has published her writing in many literary journals.
Declan Toohey was born in Scotland in 1997 and grew up in County Kildare, Ireland. In 2021 he was a winner of the Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair, and in 2022 he won the Maeve Binchy Travel Award. A graduate of the MFA program in Creative Writing at University College Dublin, he is the recipient of an Agility Award from the Arts Council of Ireland. His writing has appeared in the Irish Times, the Irish Independent, and the anthology Queer Love (ed. Paul McVeigh, 2021), among other outlets. His debut novel, Perpetual Comedown, was published by New Island Books in February 2023.
Brenda Romero is an award-winning game designer, Fulbright scholar, entrepreneur, artist, writer, and creative director who entered the game industry in 1981. She won a BAFTA Special Award in April 2017.
